Genre-busting Passion and Individuality at

The saxophonists Archie Shepp and Charles Lloyd both came to prominence in the 1960s, Shepp as part of the African-American avant garde and Lloyd as part of a crossover with rock. Shepp's gruff-toned tenor has mellowed since the fiery days of screeching brass and turbulent rhythm, and he is using an orthodox piano trio for his Nov 13 gig. Lloyd is still pushing his boundaries, and on Nov 19 will use only tablas and drums.
