How or when did you first discover jazz? It was all around me. All my uncles and relatives would play records - my cousin Longino used to play Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, Nat King Cole, Lionel Hampton, Billie Holiday, Prez, Dizzy, Louis Armstrong...all kinds of stuff. For me it was one of the wonders of the world. The expression of flight, brilliance, pure elixir.

During 1966-69 Charles Lloyd led one of the most popular groups in jazz, a unit that played at the rock palace Fillmore West in San Francisco and toured the U.S.S.R. Lloyd's music, although generally a bit melodic, was not watered-down and managed to catch on for several years during a time when jazz was at its low point in popularity . . .
